Commercial Level 2 Charging Stations
The level 2 commercial electric vehicle charger is ideal for apartments condos, workplaces, hospitality or anywhere you will be parked for a couple to even a few hours. Commercial level 2 chargers can add 25 to 40 miles of range to an electric car. Most electric cars have around a 90kw battery with some being more and some being less but 90kw is average. Commercial level 2 chargers can come in different sizes. Some level 2 chargers may be able to charge 7kw, 11kw or even 19kw per hour. To figure out how long an average level 2 charger takes to charge an electric car is just doing a little math. If you have a 90kw battery and you need to charge 60kw to have a full charge and you have an 11kw level 2 charger, it would take almost 6 hours.
That is the easy math but it is only 90% correct because different electric vehicle batteries can take in different amounts of power and then when the battery gets 80% full the charging slows way down to protect the battery.
DC Fast Charging Stations
On the other hand, we have DC Fast chargers which can add 150 miles of range an hour or even more. The DC Fast chargers are chargers you will want to install at businesses that people need to get a charger in 30 to 45 minutes like gas stations or rest areas. Again, there are also many sizes of fast chargers and the higher the kw per hour, the faster the charge. “Well kind of, you still have the same reasoning why the level 2 math is not 100% correct”. A small DC Fast Charger would be 30kw and even 60kw.
DC Fast Chargers for Gas Stations
If you owner a gas station you would want to install at least a 120kw DC fast charger but would be better off by going ahead and installing the 180kw charger. The 120kw charger is big enough for most of the electric cars currently on the road right now but the 180kw charger doesn’t cost much more than the 120kw charger, it is better to spend a little more now to make sure you are covered for any electric vehicle that will be coming out in the years to come.
Make your EV chargers easy to find
One of the best benefits of installing electric vehicle chargers is that your business will appear in every electric vehicle directory. Everyone that owns an electric car has an app on their phone that tells them where all of the EV charging stations are located across the country. The apps also have a trip finder that will tell them where to stop on road trips. This is another reason it is important to get the right charger for your business.
Offer your EV drivers a good experience
Another benefit to installing new EV chargers right now is you will be among the first and have the first opportunity to build that repeat customer relationship. It is important you think about what would make an EV driver come back again and again. Most of your EV driver customers will be sitting in the parking lot for 30 – 45 minutes when they are using a DC Fast charger and could be 2-3 hours if they are charging their vehicles with a level 2 charger.
